There aren’t many strict guidelines for kitchen design; it’s very subjective. A design element or arrangement for one individual may not be ideal for another. The ten items listed above must be considered before you begin your new kitchen design project.
The following ten criteria are crucial for any kitchen design project.
1. The work triangle, the area between the sink, refrigerator, and stove, should be no longer than 26 feet and have no side longer than 9 feet or no side shorter than 4 feet for efficiency.
2. Choose at least 13′ of base cabinets, 12′ of wall cabinets, and 11′ of countertops in kitchens with less than 150 square feet. Choose at least 16′ of base cabinets, 15 1/2′ wall cabinets, and 16 1/2′ countertops for bigger kitchens.
3. Design work aisles to be at least 48″ wide in multi-cook kitchens and at least 42″ wide for one cook for convenience.
4. Define counter space as having a minimum of 24″ on one side and 18″ on the other of the sink.
5. If a typical refrigerator has a side-by-side design, give at least 15″ of counter space on both sides to offer the most accessible landing for unloading food. Alternatively, place a landing spot no further than 48″ from the refrigerator, immediately across from it.
6. Install the dishwasher with at least 21″ of standing space next to it, and place it within 36″ of one side of the sink for easy cleaning.
7. Provide counter space nearby at least 15″ wide and 16″ deep for microwaves and ovens.
8. No cabinet, appliance, or entrance door should obstruct another for maximum clearance.
9. Plan for work counters of varying heights; between 28 and 36″ above the floor (easier for cutting and seated-use access) and between 36 and 46″ for general chores, for comfort, and to prevent repetitive-motion damage (higher counters accommodate taller cooks).
10. Ensure the clearance is at least 24″ for a fireproof surface and 30″ for an exposed surface when installing a cabinet unit above the cooktop.
The art and science of kitchen design go hand in hand. The project’s result may be significantly affected by knowing the appropriate dimensions to utilize while designing the project.
