At least 19 people were killed in Russian missile attacks on apartment buildings in a coastal town near the Ukrainian city of Odessa early Friday morning. The authorities gave this information. The attack comes as Russian forces on Thursday withdrew from Sneak Island, a major island in the Black Sea. A video of the attack showed the wreckage of buildings in the small town of Serhivka, 50 km southwest of Odessa.

Ukraine’s presidential office said three X-22 missiles fired by Russian launchers hit a building and two camps. “A terrorist state is killing our people,” said the chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Andrei Yermak. They are fighting civilians in response to defeat in the war zone. The Ukrainian Security Service said 19 people, including two children, had died. Another 38, including six children and a pregnant woman, were taken to hospital. Most of the victims are residents of apartment buildings.

However, Russian forces are involved in efforts to encircle the eastern Luhansk province. The Kremlin (the Russian presidential office) described the withdrawal of troops from Snake Island as a “goodwill gesture”.
