Gotabaya Rajapaksa may return to Sri Lanka


Peace has not been fully achieved in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, there is news that former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country in the midst of the crisis, can now return to the country. However, the position is not clear about the date of his return. Protesters in Sri Lanka were accusing the Gotabaya government of spoiling the situation. Presently, Sri Lanka is chaired by Ranil Wickremesinghe as president.

According to the BBC, a parliamentarian said Rajapaksa is expected to return to Sri Lanka. Cabinet spokesman Pandula Gunawarden said on Tuesday that Rajapaksa is not in hiding but his arrival date is unknown. The former president fled the country for the Maldives on July 13 and from there headed to Singapore on July 14.

He submitted his resignation shortly after his arrival in Singapore, which was accepted by the Sri Lankan Cabinet on 15 July. According to media reports, he was initially granted a 14-day visa, which was later extended for another 14 days. However, it is also said that he may visit the UAE.
