Bindyarani Devi won the silver with his impressive performance on day two of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Bindyarani won the silver in the women’s 55kg category by lifting her record weight. Champion Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold medal. Hours after Sanket Sargar won the silver and Gururaja Pojari won the bronze, Bindyarani lifted a total of 202kg (86kg in the snatch and 116kg in the jerk). Four medals.
With her impressive weight of 116kg, Bindyarani not only won her first Commonwealth Games medal but also achieved a personal best, national record and Commonwealth Games record in cleanliness and jerk. Nigeria’s Adegat Adenik Olarinwe won the gold at 203 kg (92 + 111), while England’s Frey Moreau won the bronze with a time of 198 kg.
Bandiyarani started her campaign by lifting 81kg in her first attempt and 84kg and 86kg in her second and third attempt. At the end of the snatch series, Bindyarani finished third behind Adegat and Moro, who lifted 92kg and 89kg respectively.
During the clean jerk series, Bindiarani looked deserving of a bronze medal. While Freire Moreau was sure she would take the silver, she made a mistake while trying to win the gold. Moro added an extra 6 kg to her last load, which caused her to stumble and this allowed Bindiarani to change the color of her medal. The 23-year-old needed to lift 116kg to finish second and did so to win a silver medal.
